Crowdfunding site Indiegogo has netted a round of investors including business
magnate Richard Branson, PayPal co-founder and former CTO Max Levchin, and
Google X's Megan Smith, reports Business Insider. The investment's amount has
not been disclosed but is estimated by some to be in the millions. After Indiegogo's
$40 million Series B in January, to be used at the time for hiring, increasing its mobile
presence, and general expansion brought the San Francisco-based company's total
funding up to $56.5M, according to Crunchbase, the online platform has been looking
to expand its global reach even further. Though its campaigns must be based in the
United States, Indiegogo can accept contributions from over 200 countries and regions
(by comparison, Kickstarter can only send payments to the U.S., the UK, Australia, New
Zealand, and the Netherlands).
Such an initiative appealed to entrepreneurs like Branson whose Virgin enterprise is
famously looking beyond earth's atmosphere -- and Smith, who, according to Indiegogo
CEO Slava Rubin, could help the company grow on a worldwide scale. “The key here is
the people and getting them involved,” he told TechCrunch. “We are looking for the incredible
operating experience all of them have and because they’ve created and run massive
growth companies.”
