Writer-cartoonist Aaron McGruder has signed a first-look development deal with Adult Swim.
The deal comes a month before the “Boondocks” creator’s live-action comedy “Black Jesus”
premieres on Adult Swim. The series finds the religious figure living in present day Compton,
Calif. on a mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood.“With ‘The
Boondocks’ and the upcoming ‘Black Jesus’ series, we consider Aaron very instrumental
in the success of Adult Swim and this deal is the continuation of a great partnership,” said
Mike Lazzo, executive vice president and creative director of Adult Swim, in a statement.
McGruder’s first project as part of the overall deal will be a new live-action adventure pilot
under the working title “Hooligan Squad.” Set in the near future, the pilot focuses on an
American insurgency in Japanese-occupied San Francisco. McGruder will executive
produce and direct the episode along with his manager, LEG’s Norman Aladjem and
R&G Production’s Steven Tzirlin executive producing.
