The Fela! Band will give three performances at the Sundance Film festival to celebrate Alex
Gibney’s documentary “Finding Fela.” The band, featuring lead singer Sahr Ngaujah and musicians
associated with the musical “Fela!,” will performance at the film’s premiere party on Jan. 17 at the
Sundance Channel House, Jan. 18 at the Sundance Music Cafe hosted by KCRW and Jan. 19 at
the Sundance House as part of The Sundance Institute's Film Music Program’s Celebration of
Music in Film. Besides Ngaujah, the Fela! Band comprises guitarists Ricardo Quinones and Bryan
Vargas, drummer Greg Gonzalez, percussionist Dylan Fusillo, Tim Allen on bass and a horn section
of Mike Kammers, Morgan Price and Jeff Pierce. Oneika Phillips and Malaiyka Reid are the other
singers. “Finding Fela!” has its world premiere at 2:15 p.m. Jan. 17 at the MARC in Park City, Utah.
Gibney, who won the documentary Oscar for “Taxi To The Dark Side” and produced “History of the
Eagles,” describes the film as a look at the Nigerian musician’s life “and the attempt to re-create
his magic in the present as a way of finding the essence of what made him tick, and why we care
about him so much still so many years afterwards.”
